TV REVIEW: Twisted Metal (1.5) – CRZSRDS

First Things First…

I’m actually a little bummed to be moving on from Convoy so soon. Last episode was my favorite so far and, while a lot of that has to do with John and Quiet continuing to bond, it’s also because I enjoyed Granny, Watts, and the vibes from Convoy. But I imagine a new adventure awaits us…

3 Things I Like

3. Quiet’s Subconscious

I didn’t have any particular attachment to Quiet’s brother, what with him being killed off in the premiere without much screen time. But it’s cool to see him here as a manifestation of Quiet’s subconscious. It’s played for laughs, as he wonders at first why she’s remembering him all bloodied up like he was at his death.

But it also lets us see more emotion from Quiet than we’re used to, as it’s clear she misses him. And, because he’s really part of her own mind, he clues us in to her feelings about John.

2. Sweet Tooth’s New Mission

This is more of what I wanted to see from Sweet Tooth—anarchy and over the top violence.

There’s still some silliness, but it seems less aggressively like they’re just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Also, I like how the lawmen running the outpost at the Hoover Dam are no match for him. And now, after earning some new fans and taking Stu under his wing following a gruesome rescue, his new mission is to take out all the outposts, freeing all the captives and earning legions of fans.

1. Quiet’s Goodbye Letter

When I first realized Quiet had poisoned John so she could go off on her own, I didn’t think there was any way to make it make sense. But it does, and she explains it all in a heartfelt and hilarious letter.

You can see the attachment has formed on her end, too, despite said poisoning. It comes through in her main reason for leaving John—she knew he’d offer to help her infiltrate Topeka to take revenge on Stone, but it’s not his fight. She wants him to have his chance at a new life in New San Francisco, and to leave his milkman days behind.

It’s sweet, it makes what seemed like a terribly irrational decision make sense, but it still has that Quiet flair.

2 Things I’m Mixed On

2. Sibling Cops

A new brother and sister enter the scene as cops in Topeka. They’re charged with finding John and Quiet.

They’re fine, they just didn’t stick out to me. When Mike and Stu entered the show, they were immediately entertaining, and I was drawn into their story. But these two didn’t make me care, at least so far.

1. John Saves the Day

It’s a cool scene when John shows up in the nick of time to rescue Quiet (while blasting “MMMBop”) …

But also, how predictable and cliché that he shows up in the nick of time to rescue Quiet.

1 Thing I Don’t Like

1. Crazy Old Perv

They continue the running gag of John not being able to throw a knife properly, which is funny. But otherwise, I didn’t really like how flippantly they depict John about to get raped while he’s unconscious.

I mean, I know they play everything for laughs, including a ton of murder, mayhem, and violence. This scene just feels different to me, and I didn’t enjoy it.

The Review

77%

There’s less John than usual in this episode because it’s really about Quiet’s solo adventure, and because Sweet Tooth unexpectedly returns in spectacular fashion. But I’m into both those storylines, so it doesn’t suffer. We have another good one on our hands.
